Solar system price in Ghana: a plain buying guide
Written for Ghanaian homes and small shops — Accra to Tamale. Prices are quoted in cedis (GH₵) and change with the exchange rate, so treat every figure as a planning range and confirm the live price on the product page.

Start with what you actually want to run
Most people in Ghana buy solar for one of two reasons: to survive dumsor without petrol generator noise, or to cut an ECG bill that keeps climbing. The sizing is the same either way. List the appliances you must keep on, multiply each one's watts by the hours you use it, and add them up — that daily total in watt-hours (Wh) is the number every installer will ask for.
A quick example: 6 LED bulbs (10 W × 5 hrs = 300 Wh) + a fridge (150 W averaged over 24 hrs ≈ 1,500 Wh) + a TV (90 W × 4 hrs = 360 Wh) + phones and router (≈200 Wh) lands near 2.4 kWh a day. Southern Ghana gets roughly 4–5 useful sun-hours a day, so about 600 W of panel is the bare minimum for that load, and 900 W–1.2 kW is the realistic figure once you allow for harmattan haze, cloud and losses.
Three system sizes that cover most Ghanaian homes
| System | What it runs | Panels | Battery | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small backup (0.6–1 kVA) | Lights, phone charging, Wi-Fi router, TV, fan | 1–2 × 300–450 W | 1 × 100 Ah lithium (≈1.2 kWh) | Renting, small room or shop counter |
| Family essentials (2–3 kVA) | The above plus fridge, freezer, standing fans, laptops | 4–6 × 450 W | 2.4–5 kWh lithium | 2–3 bedroom home riding out dumsor |
| Whole-home (5 kVA+) | Adds one AC unit, borehole pump, heavier kitchen use | 8–12 × 450 W | 10 kWh+ lithium | Larger homes, guest houses, salons |
Air conditioners are the line most budgets break on. One 1.5 hp split AC running four hours needs roughly 4 kWh on its own — more than the entire family-essentials system above. If AC is non-negotiable, size for it from day one or buy an inverter-type AC that draws far less.
What you are paying for
- Solar panel (450 W mono):Turns sunlight into DC power
- Inverter (pure sine wave):Converts to 230 V AC your sockets accept
- Battery (LiFePO4 preferred):Stores power for night and dumsor
- Charge controller (MPPT):Charges the battery efficiently
- Mounting, cabling, breakers:Roof rails, DC/AC cable, protection
- Installation & certification:Licensed installer, Energy Commission rules
As a rule of thumb in the Ghanaian market, the battery is the single biggest line item, panels have become the cheapest part, and installation is usually 10–15% of the hardware cost. A lithium (LiFePO4) battery costs more upfront than tubular lead-acid but typically lasts three to four times as many cycles, so per year of service it is normally the cheaper choice. Because most components are imported, cedi–dollar movement changes quotes month to month; get your quote in writing with a validity date.
Solar vs a generator
A 3 kVA petrol generator is cheaper to buy, but it burns fuel every single outage, needs servicing, and cannot run overnight in a bedroom. Solar costs more once and then costs almost nothing to run. Many households in Accra and Kumasi keep both: solar for the fridge, lights, fans and internet, and the generator only for heavy, occasional loads.
Before you pay — a Ghana checklist
- Ask for the panel, inverter and battery datasheets, not just a kVA number on WhatsApp.
- Confirm the inverter is pure sine wave — modified sine damages fridges and some TVs.
- Check the battery chemistry and cycle rating (LiFePO4 with 3,000+ cycles is the sensible target).
- Use an installer registered with the Energy Commission, and keep the installation invoice.
- Confirm the warranty is honoured locally in Ghana, and who comes if the inverter trips.
- Plan for harmattan dust: panels lose output when dirty, so budget a rinse every few weeks.
- Match roof orientation — a south-facing pitch with no tree or water-tank shadow beats a bigger panel count.
Common mistakes
- Buying by price alone and ending up with an undersized battery that dies flat by 10 pm.
- Adding panels later to a charge controller that cannot take the extra voltage.
- Ignoring the fridge's start-up surge, which is several times its running wattage.
- Skipping breakers and proper earthing to save a few cedis — the most expensive saving there is.
